Cushions

I recently changed things up in our living room so we needed some new cushions.

Cushions are very easy to make, yet usually disproportionately expensive to buy.

Unless they are completely tedious to make (like that criss-cross one below)

I usually make my own.

I'm going to show you how to make the grey honeycomb cushion below.

First you'll need to decide how wide you want your pleats. 

Make sure they are even (they need to meet exactly when you fold them towards each other)

I like to measure and then mark them with pins, but a fabric marker might be better. 

Remember to allow enough fabric to cover your cushion

- once the fabric is pleated it will be considerably smaller.

Press with an iron. (middle marking of each)

Sew pleats all the way across (left and right markings together, wrong sides together).

Fold pleats towards each other and secure with a few stitches (yellow)

Alternate, turning pleats left  then right, then left, etc. all the way across.

Use two pieces of fabric. Pin the zip to the top piece, right sides together.

Pin zip to bottom piece right sides together and baste.

Front view.

Fold the bottom piece up and cover the zip.

Sew into place. (blue line).

Make sure to align the folded fabric so that when you stitch you do not sew

through the zip.

"Hoooked" crochet cushion

I had been wanting an excuse to make something with Hoooked Zpagetti yarn.

The yarn is made from offcuts of new fashion garments.

It was really fun to crochet with and the cushion was very quick to make.

The finished cushion was 50 cm x 50 cm.

Unfortunately I had not ordered enough yarn to make both sides,

just the front of the cushion.

For that size cushion, I would recommend purchasing 2 bundles (135 yards each)

I ended up sewing a fabric back to my cushion 

(by hand, because it was too thick to sew on the machine) 

I just did hdc across

I made another cushion for the playroom. I cut out 100s of little fleece circles

(felt would work too but didn't think it would be as cozy)

I sewed the circles on to the fabric at random until it was full.

For the yellow pillow, I used the same technique to make a flap to hide the zip.

I added some contrasting piping around the cushion
